"BACK TO THE TRACKS (VINYL EP) (Sting In The Tail Records SITTEP 1; UK) A review by Rob Bradford taken from Pipeline Instrumental Review Autumn 1993 (Reproduced by kind permission of Rob Bradford and Pipeline Magazine)
Temptation / Last Chance? / Telstar / Hot Rod Breakdown Here it is at last, The Scorpions' long-awaited EP and their first official new release for over 30 years. It doesn't disappoint, instrumental aficionados and Joe Meek fans alike will be delighted. Those of us who have seen them perform live since they reformed in 1992 will certainly relish their powerhouse version of "Temptation", definitely an instrumental classic. Their 1961 recording still lies in EMI's vaults, meanwhile this will do nicely! The Joe Meek Society was a catalyst in reuniting the band who had recorded for Joe Meek as The Ferridays, it's fitting therefore that they include "Telstar" here. As ever, they stamp their unique sound onto the immortal melody - a great combination. Both "Last Chance?" and "Hot Rod Breakdown" are group originals, and yet further examples of great unreleased instrumentals. The original sixties versions only survive on acetates. Ted, John and Ivor are steeped in rock & roll and this is a super
brace of rocking instrumentals in the "Rockin' At The Phil" mould. 'Back
To The Tracks' comes highly recommended so, with only 1,000 pressed, get
it now while you still can.
